At least the carpet and house keeping could be improved. The rooms are so small that the possibilities for improvement are limited. The lobby would have to be completely done over and made to feel more spacious and inviting. The prospects for the hotel becoming a real Kimpton appear quite limited. There were ample supplies of complimentary coffee in the morning. This made the price about the same as a Holiday Inn. The manager did take $100 off the bill per night. Most of the staff were helpful with suggestions and directions, including print outs for directions. The location as mentioned above is pretty good. we had to wait 30 minutes for the car to come. He was charged $45 a night for the service. My brother and family drove to Boston and had valet parking. We did not eat here so we cannot comment on the food. The Rose room café was also dark and uninviting with high costs for breakfast items. In fact, this Kimpton had two sizes of bottled water in the room to select from. Better than nothing but not the nice cold water to take with you when you toured the city. Instead of giving you free bottled water there was an urn by the elevator with plastic cups. The other missing ingredient was free bottled water in the morning. The Onyx had one cheap fruity wine that was awful. Other Kimptons have served a variety of white wines. We skipped the wine hour after the first two nights because the wine was terrible. Two perks we have always enjoyed at Kimptons, until now, was the wine hour with good wine. When our family arrived, not only was there room a lousy, dark one but it also had a dirty carpet. The manager said he would give their room the VIP treatment. We told him my brother was coming in with his family later in the week. During a later telephone call, the manager did give us a discount off the room. The desk clerk said there was nothing he could do for us. When we arrived and had seen the room we complained. Parts of the carpet were not even vacuumed. The carpet was stained in numerous places and does not appear to have been cleaned for quite a while. The room appears to be only a couple of feet wider than a cruise ship room. It was stated to be 280 Square Feet and if you took out all of the walls, etc., it might be. The room was much smaller than we expected. This hotel feels and looks like a tired Holiday Inn. We also chose the Onyx because it is near the subway, Freedom Trail, and Little Italy. We chose the hotel because it is in the Kimpton chain which has previously always delivered high quality rooms and service, until now. We stayed for 4 nights at the Onyx Hotel in Boston. The staff here genuinely care about your experience at their hotel and go out of their way to ensure that your time here is hassle-free.THE ONYX HOTEL IS NOT A GOOD STAY. Now that 'The Big Dig' is finished, Boston itself looks glorious and is a real walker-friendly town with plenty to do and see, even for the most jaded/hard-to-impress traveller. Would we go back? Absolutely - and look forward to it. There's a great Irish (as opposed to the usual 'Oirish') Pub just down the street and you're in 10 mins walking distance from the a range of top restaurants, town centre and the waterfront. Hotel room: spotlessly clean, massive choice of in-house films on demand, splendidly equipped mini-bar, good room-service menu and - uncommonly for most US hotels - a large, well equipped bathroom (New York take note!) with a range of shower settings which gave you, variously, a happy medium between a rabbit-punch and a Thai Massage. All in all, the staff made the stay extremely enjoyable, and took away from the disappointing location and lack of amenities in the area.Ĭouldn't fault this place at all! Staff: switched-on, genuinely helpful and polite (couldn't do enough for us). There is a 7/11 on the corner of Portland St., but again we avoided it at night. There are very few places in the location to eat, with many of the local bars closed down. It is a good 20 minute walk to Downtown Crossing and the neighborhood at night is less than savoury, with alot of undesirables wandering the streets. That said, we didn't realize that this neighborhood becomes a late night party-scene after 10pm. The only drawback of this hotel is location. Room was actually quite lovely very clean and well appointed and the staff was generally very friendly and helpful. The rooms and bathrooms were immaculately clean. If you like art deco style, you'll love this. Our room was mediocre, being quite small and the view of a brick wall from our window was less than endearing! The decor is great, red and black being the main colour theme. They were helpful and friendly and seemed to really enjoy their jobs! We got a great rate of 550 euros, room only, for 2 people. Have just returned from a three night stay at the Onyx Hotel, Boston.
